DS-160 photo requirements: US visa photo in 2026
The DS-160 is the online form for every US non-immigrant visa (B1/B2, F-1, H-1B, and more). The photo you upload is checked automatically by facial recognition — one of the strictest checks in the world. Here's exactly what it requires.
DS-160 photo specs
The US State Department publishes these exact requirements:
- Size: square, 2×2 inches (51×51 mm).
- Head height: between 25 mm and 35 mm (about 50–69% of the frame).
- Background: pure white or off-white, plain.
- Colour: full colour, not black and white.
- Recent: taken within the last 6 months.
- File: JPEG, between 600×600 and 1200×1200 px, max 240 KB.
Why DS-160 photos get flagged
The State Department runs each uploaded photo through automated facial recognition to detect glasses, red eye, non-white background, poor lighting and printed photos re-photographed with a phone. The most common cause of a failed upload is a background that's slightly off-white or has a visible shadow.
What to bring to the interview
Even though you uploaded the photo online, most US consulates ask for a printed 2×2 in copy at the interview. IDReady.ai gives you both the digital JPEG for the DS-160 upload and a printable sheet for the appointment.
