What background for a passport photo? White, cream or light grey
The background is the #1 reason passport photos get rejected. It has to be plain, uniform and light — but the exact colour varies by country. Here's what each major authority currently requires.
Pure white background
The most common standard — used by the US, India, Schengen states, and most of Latin America and Asia. The background must be a single, uniform white with no texture, pattern or gradient. Shadows behind the head count as rejections.
Off-white or cream (UK)
The UK HM Passport Office specifies a plain light-grey or cream background. Pure white is technically not accepted because it makes it harder to see the outline of light-coloured hair or clothing.
Light grey
Some EU states — Ireland, Malta, Cyprus — also allow light grey. Australia and New Zealand accept plain white or plain light grey.
How to get a compliant background at home
You don't need a real backdrop. Take the photo in front of any plain wall, at least 40 cm away to avoid shadows. IDReady.ai automatically replaces the background with the exact colour required by your document.
