What to wear for a passport photo

Wear a solid, dark or medium-coloured top that contrasts with the white background — navy, black, dark grey, burgundy. Avoid white or very light shirts (they blend), patterns, uniforms, low-cut tops, hats and sunglasses. Everyday street clothes only.

Do & Don't

Do wear dark solids

Navy, black, dark grey, burgundy, forest green — anything that contrasts with a white background.

Don't wear white

White or cream tops disappear into the background and cause automatic rejection.

Don't wear uniforms

Military, police, airline and other work uniforms are banned in most countries.

Head coverings

Religious coverings are allowed if the full face oval remains visible without shadows.

Frequently asked questions

What colour should I wear for a passport photo?+

Wear a solid, dark or medium colour that clearly contrasts with the white/light background. Navy, black, dark grey, burgundy and forest green all work. Avoid white or very light shirts — they blend with the background.

Can I wear a white shirt in a passport photo?+

It is strongly discouraged. Because the background must be white or off-white, a white top makes your shoulders disappear and the photo often gets rejected. Choose a darker colour.

Can I wear a uniform in a passport photo?+

No. Military, police, airline and other work uniforms are not accepted in most countries. Everyday street clothes only.

Can I wear a hat or head covering?+

No hats, caps or hoods. Religious head coverings (hijab, turban, kippah) are allowed as long as the full face oval — from forehead to chin, and both ears where possible — remains visible without shadows.

Can I wear jewellery or earrings?+

Small everyday jewellery (stud earrings, thin necklaces) is fine as long as it does not cover the face. Large earrings, chokers and face piercings that reflect the flash can cause rejection.

Can I wear makeup?+

Yes — natural, everyday makeup is allowed. Heavy contouring, dramatic eye makeup or filters that alter facial features are not, because they change the biometric appearance.
