What size is an Australian passport photo?+
The Australian Passport Office (APO) requires two identical 35×45 mm (3.5×4.5 cm) colour photos, taken in the last 6 months, one endorsed on the back by the guarantor.
Are glasses allowed?+
No. Since July 2018 the APO no longer accepts photos with glasses, except when a signed medical statement is attached to the application.
What background is required?+
Plain, uniform light-coloured background — white, cream or light grey — without shadows, patterns or textures behind the head.
Can I smile in an Australian passport photo?+
No. The Australian Passport Office requires a neutral expression with the mouth closed and both eyes open and clearly visible, aligned with ICAO 9303 rules.
Do I still need a guarantor endorsement?+
Yes. For a paper application, a Category 1 guarantor must sign the back of one photo with 'This is a true photograph of [full name]'. For online passport applications the endorsement is not needed on the digital file.
