UK visa photo requirements 2026 (Visitor, Skilled Worker, Student)
UK visa photos follow the same HMPO photo standard as UK passports: 35×45 mm on a plain light grey or cream background. Every UK visa category uses this exact spec, submitted digitally at a UKVCAS or TLS Contact appointment.
UK visa photo specs (HMPO standard)
The UK Home Office reuses the HMPO passport photo standard for every visa category. The specs are published on gov.uk and enforced automatically by UKVCAS/TLS at biometrics appointments.
- Size: 35 mm wide × 45 mm high, portrait orientation.
- Face height (chin to crown): 29–34 mm.
- Background: plain light grey or cream, no shadows.
- Expression: neutral, mouth closed, both eyes open, looking at camera.
- No glasses (rule since 2016).
- Digital JPG at UKVCAS: minimum 600×750 px, maximum 6 MB.
Skilled Worker and Health & Care visa applicants
Skilled Worker visas (SOC code visas) and Health & Care Worker visas use the same photo as tourist and student visas. Sponsors and Certificate of Sponsorship documents do not require a separate photo — only the visa application itself.
Common rejections at UKVCAS
UKVCAS staff run a quick visual check before accepting the photo. When they reject, it's usually for one of these reasons.
- Background too dark or textured — must be light grey/cream, not white.
- Glasses left on — every UK visa photo since 2016 requires no glasses.
- Shadow behind the head from a ring light or flash.
- Head tilted more than a few degrees.
