Australia visa photo requirements 2026 (Visitor, Student, Skilled)
Australian visa photos follow the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) standard — the same one used for Australian passports. Every visa subclass, from a Visitor (600) to Skilled Independent (189), submits the same 35×45 mm photo through ImmiAccount.
Australian visa photo specs
DFAT publishes the specs on the Department of Home Affairs website. The standard is aligned with ICAO 9303 with one small tweak: the background can be white, light grey or light blue, not strictly white like the US or India.
- Size: 35 × 45 mm, portrait orientation.
- Face height (chin to crown): 32–36 mm.
- Background: plain white, light grey or light blue.
- Expression: neutral, mouth closed, both eyes open, looking at camera.
- No glasses (rule since 2020).
- Digital JPG: minimum 900×1200 px, maximum 5 MB.
Working Holiday, Student and Skilled visas
The same 35×45 mm photo is used for Working Holiday (417/462), Student (500), Skilled Independent (189), Skilled Nominated (190), Employer Sponsored (482/186), Partner (309/820) and every other visa subclass.
Common Australia visa photo rejections
The Australian system is more forgiving than most, but there are still three recurring reasons for rejection.
- Face height outside 32–36 mm range.
- Glasses left on — banned since 2020.
- Photo taken more than 6 months before submission.
